DACS was established as the first copyright collecting society for artists and visual creators in 1983 by a group of artists. One of those founding artists was Elaine Kowalsky. As well as being a practicing artist, Elaine gave unstintingly of her time and served on DACS' Board of Directors, including a long period as Chair.
Throughout her involvement wtih DACS, Elaine was a vocal proponent of and campaigned vigorously for artists' rights. She was also very aware of the need for opportunities for artists to exhibit their work throughout their career and particularly for those whose work flourished later in life. Elaine's charisma and passion were lost to us when she died suddenly in September 2005.

In January 2005 DACS moved into its current premises, part of which had been designated as a gallery space. Following Elaine's untimely death, it was decided to open The Kowalsky Gallery as a fitting memorial of her service to DACS and the wider community of artists we serve.
It was appropriate then that the inaugural exhibition of The Kowalsky Gallery was of Elaine's work which was exhibited from November 2006 - March 2007.
